Highway 12 Fall Color

Fall color has been lacking this year in Utah, but at least I saw a little bit while driving home on Highway 12. I'm sure it was better just a week earlier, but I also liked the contrast between the pines, the aspens with leaves, and the aspens with no leaves.

Autumn is such a great time to explore rural Southern Utah!

Nature's Fireworks Over Zion Canyon

It's always nice when the skies cooperate after you make an effort to get out to a viewpoint! Here's a sweet sunset over Zion Canyon. The low peak you see in the center of the image is Angel's Landing. This is a single image exposure with my Sony A7rII (no filters either). I love the dynamic range this camera has.

Cottonwood Stripes

An East Zion classic. The fall color sure was good in East Zion this year with intense reds in the maples and yellows in the cottonwoods.

Good Morning From Bryce

I love sunrises at Bryce Canyon when the hoodoos take on that sublime glow from the nascent light. Here's an image from our Southern Utah fall colors workshop. This is such a beautiful canyon in autumn!

Storm at Devil's Garden

This day was full of extremes! We had snow in the morning, then overcast skies while we shot a beautiful canyon full of fall foliage. On our hike back out, the skies began to clear and soon there wasn't a cloud in the sky! So we stopped and had a picnic lunch with our workshop group. But it wasn't long before dark clouds loomed on the horizon and soon it was pouring rain again. We grabbed all our stuff and hurried to the vehicles. After looking at the skies, we determined we'd have the best chance for epic light out at Devil's Garden. The road was a sloppy mess and the vehicles were covered in thick mud by the time we got there. But once the rain stopped, the light started to break. It was hard to know what to shoot with a rainbow behind us and cloud color on the other side. This is probably one of the most unique images I'll ever take of Devil's Garden.

East Fork Flood

This was a pretty exciting morning. We went to Zion to get some sunrise shots, but it started raining before we even started our hike. I looked at the sky and saw that there was a slight break in the clouds far to the east of us. So we hurried that direction and ended up at the lesser visited fork of the Virgin River. The sky exploded in color for a few minutes and I took a long exposure to capture the flash flood that was moving through. This was a single exposure image - I'm always amazed at the dynamic range my Sony can produce!
